Background Story
Chapter 1:
The carnival lights shown bright in the night's sky. The sound of children's laughter and the loud chatter of interested adults filled the streets. Flyers had been posted to every light pole and handed out to everyone who would accept them. Booths were set up where the smell of delicious foods brought you to them. Games where you could toss a ball and win a prize were very popular as well. Merry go rounds were very popular and balloon animals could be seen in the hands of almost every child running around, in the other hand, cotton candy. Ferris wheels were romantic for lovers, fun for children, sometimes a source of fear for adults but none the less their lights drew people towards it even if it was just to look. The clowns ran around the grounds being goofy and funny, there were fortune tellers too, and of course the show under the big top. Where the ring leader directed traffic between trapeze artists, lion tamers, horse acrobats, and elephant trainers. But this was during the day until the sky started getting dark, after that children went home tired and weary with stuffed animals in hands falling asleep in their parents arms.
A light or two flickered as the carousel creaked as it spun around slowly to a stop to let a few kids off. The ornate designs on the saddles of the horses were faded and far from their prime. The music coming from the carousel as well as the music from the rest of the carnival were a little messed up to say the least, playing on a bad loop. The lights seemed to work their magic illuminating the pathways through the carnival the sound of children laughing and begging their parents resonated through the grounds. The smell of food lifted up into the air drawing people from one booth to another, cotton candy in hand as they tossed a baseball trying to knock over a target, loosing all their money trying to win abnormally large stuffed animals for their girlfriends. The sound of the roller coaster drowned out the sounds of talk for a moment when it sped by on the tracks.
The place was a little dirty with gum and candy stuck on the floor, it wasn't in the best conditions but it was still standing. The place was a little old there were metal rods that were a tad bit rusty, some banners and tends needed a bit of an upgrade, not to mention some flickering light bulbs. But it was always carnival season here, they never left to find a better place for business, the people tended to come with or without new light bulbs. There were shows and attractions and everyone that worked there called it home.
Chapter 2:
They were all outcasts and misfits. They came from homes where they were no longer wanted and abandoned. Sometimes it was just as simple as being homeless from the start of it all. They might have just been rejected by their peers or species. If you asked them their stories would range from sob story to run away. Their hearts were cold and lonely and the lights from the carnival guided them to a sense of warmth and home. The kindness from the ringmaster was either a first or a fond memory of something they all yearned for. They didn't mind the broken down carnival, it was just like them, a little broken inside but still alive.
Life didn't stop once the tickets were sold out and the people had gone home. The lights remained on and the creatures that called the carnival home began their own rituals of the night and early morning hours. They cleaned up and made things presentable as they could. Sometimes one thing would get a new paint job but there were a hundred other things that needed paint too. Trash was taken out, the extra food was eaten, the games were restored to their original set up, they practiced their tasks for tomorrow, costumes were washed, it was an endless carnival. They all had time to sleep, some slept in the day and worked around at night, some slept at night and worked in the day, they all got food from the carnival and had adequate places to sleep. Perhaps it wasn't a glamorous life but it was a good life. A sense of family, love, appreciation, kindness, and sometimes admiration from the customers. It was better than nothing.
For those that had been abandoned or rejected there was a special something constantly running around the carnival that brought them joy. Pure happiness was embodied in a young girl who happened to be the ring masters daughter. Light brown hair flowing in the wind as her green eyes could never stop looking for someone who's day she could brighten. Her job in her young life was to hug anything in sight. She brought a sense of joy whenever she was around. No one scared her, no matter how menacing or ugly they looked, they received her love just the same. Hugs and kisses for everyone she came across and she would even sit there and talk to them as they cleaned, sometimes even tried to help. She loved everyone but there was one that was most special to her. It was her pet named Sprinkletop. He was a special creature called a flower critter, unusual to these parts and more common in the far east. She loved him more than anything, he would often prance around with her riding on his back, like the princess of the carnival.
Chapter 3:
An unfortunate event changed their daily lives. None of them really knew the exact details of what happened but the little princess no longer could be heard running around and talking to the workers. She wasn't seen at all anymore. Life changed most for Sprinkletop, It was his fault, he was abused by the ring master and forced to stay outside unless otherwise told. The rest of them couldn't help but look with a slight hint of fear. None of them knowing the whole exact story wondering if that could happen to them? Though nothing ever did happen to any of them even when mistakes were made their hearts ached for Sprinkletop, but his apathetic attitude must have made him guilty of doing something right? Sometimes he would go a day or two without eating because he wasn't allowed to leave without permission. Those who had been closer to him before the incident or those who became closer to him after helped him as best they could, sometimes bringing him food to make sure he stayed alive.
The newest addition to the carnival was a rather unique looking creature I guess you could call him a unicorn. Rejected from his own species for being 'different'. He couldn't explain why he wasn't pretty and white, why his horn was shorter than most and an odd color, why his mane and tail were far from the normal colors. Wandering for days he was attracted by the smell of the food, obviously hungry, and sneaking into the carnival grounds he found himself among other creatures like himself. Some were odd, beautiful, or like him didn't quite live up to breed standards.
