Background Story
Chapter 1:
At the bottom of the ocean the bubbles rise up passing the fish as they ascend. The vast ocean teeming with life from the fish that swim, the coral that grows, and the past buried deep within the oceans grasp. Boats scattered across the ocean floor forever stationary and decaying, memories of their glory days safely stowed away inside for only the fish to see. Swimming among the schools of fish was a small fish that looked quite out of place. A white koi fish with a red spot on its head, down its back were orange, red, and a few black splotches. It's tail wiggled furiously as it kept up with a school of yellowtail. Out of place in a vast ocean a fresh water fish in the salt water it seemed to jump from school to school of fishes that swam by, almost like a game. Something must have intrigued the little fish because it deviated from the school and swam off on its own towards a sunken ship. The ship was resting on a ledge, must have been good luck, there was no need to explore the dark depths leading to the bottom of the sea to find a ship.
Finding an entrance worthy of being the starting point of the adventure the koi fish swam inside. Thanks to many holes made in the ship it wasn't pitch black inside, streams of light from the surface shown through illuminating the path. Weaving in and out of rooms until something caught its eye. Swimming faster down the old hallway and making a sharp turn into a dark room. Something was shining on the floor. The little koi wiggled and morphed into something rather spectacular. A human upper body until it came to below the belly button and from there was a fish tail, a mystical creature, the koi fish was a mermaid. Her tail was still white with the same orange, red, and black splotches. Her hair was long and flowed in the water, white in color with a red spot on top of her head. Her nimble fingers reached down and she picked up a necklace that was caught in the floor boards. Beautiful.
Leaving the room with her new treasure in hand slowly floating down the hallway until something startled her. Something was passing over the ship, the light shining from the sun was being blocked out. Cautiously she swam out of the same hole she came from and looked up at a large black mass above her. She had found her way to the ocean by accident, having lived in large ponds that were all connected in a remote part of the forest, how was she to know what a boat was. With the necklace tight in her hand she swam towards the surface only to poke her head up and marvel at the size of the boat. She swam beside the boat as it slowly moved along following it for miles. She had nothing better to do, this ocean wasn't her home it was just a new adventure. Finally the boat docked on an island and she stayed hidden under the ship, popping out every once in a while to watch the humans get off and take equipment onto the shore.
CHAPTER 2:
She knew what humans were not like many of the fish in the sea she did not fear them. Where she used to live there were many large ponds that were all connected to each other. The humans there would bring them offerings and bring gifts to the pools. The humans treated the fish like gods after seeing them in their mermaid forms. They were like gods one of the very few clans that had survived. They had beast forms, a combination of human and beast form, and a human form after many more years of adaptation. She wondered if these humans too would worship her like the ones from home. If they would give her gifts and be kind to her, her curiosity was exciting her. They were all men here walking off the ship, the humans she knew looked like her, they were all women. It was the woman's job in the tribe of humans that worshiped them, in their traditions only a woman could lay eyes on the mermaids, the mermaids would only reveal themselves to a woman or so they believed. They would comb her hair and put flowers in it, they would dance for them and play music. Some of her sisters would grow their legs and dance with them, sometimes learn to play music, paint their faces. The some of the koi refused to even take mermaid form in front of the humans, mostly the men would stay hidden in their fish form, but some of the women and young would too. Thinking about it made her miss home, but these men, she wanted to watch them just a little bit longer then she would go home.
Something hit her in the head from above, bouncing off and into the water. She looked up and saw a shadow start to peek over the side of the boat and she quickly dove under. The water was pretty shallow here so the bottom wasn't too far for her to swim. It was a gold pocket watch, of course she didn't know what it was but she picked it up and smiled at it. It looked similar to her new necklace it was so shiny and pretty. She popped it open and looked curiously at the face of the clock as she tapped it. There was a splash at the surface of the water that she ignored as she was so interested in her new prize. That is until she felt eyes on her and she turned to look towards the shore and a young boy had stopped swimming and was treading water under the surface staring at her. Neither of them made any sharp movements and there eyes were locked in a stalemate. Who was going to break away first. The boy broke away first swimming up to the surface for a breath of air, in turn she swam under the ship to hide.
It was already night by the time she came back to the ship hiding under it again, that had been the first time she ever met a human boy. She poked her head up and looked around most of the people were inside of the tents or still on the boat. A few of them were huddled around the fires boots kicked aside with guns by their side. She looked around and found the same boy from earlier sitting near the edge of the water drawing in the wet sand with a stick. He had on a white button up collared shirt, a pair of dark brown pants and black boots. His hair was still a little wet from earlier and he had a sad look on his face. She looked at the pocket watch in her hand and frowned. He probably dropped it earlier and came in to get it. She didn't want to give it back, it was so pretty it matched her necklace but the look on his face made her feel sad for him. She carefully tossed the watch up in the air and it landed in front of the boy rolling past him a bit. He looked so surprised as he crawled over and grabbed it, looking around the water for where it came from. He managed to catch the slightest glimpse of her tail fin as she dove under water and he smiled holding the watch close to his chest.
CHAPTER 3:
The innocent little koi had yet to return home her curiosity gravitating towards the beach, the men, the boat, and that boy. She kept rationalizing with herself that she would leave after watching them just one more time it was always one more time. One morning while the fires were no longer burning only the dark smoke dissipating from the piles, the men sound asleep in their tents, and the dogs tied up in a section on the beach she popped her head up like always. Little did she know the boy had been waiting for her all night sitting on the ship looking down on either side of the ship all night and all morning. Finally he saw the bright red spot on top of her head. He quickly undid his boots kicking them off and he jumped into the water on the opposite side of the boat from her. She heard the splash and she turned her head and frowned, what was it? Diving under the water she swam around the boat and as she turned the corner she came face to face with the boy. His bright blue eyes caught her off guard as she stopped in her tracks. He reached out and grabbed her wrist as she had brought her hands in front of her our of surprise when she had came face to face with him.
She tugged her hand away from him until she saw him offer her a wide smile. Was this some kind of trick? An attack of some sorts? He brought his other hand in front of her his legs still kicking and keeping him floating. He opened his closed fist and in his palm was a pearl with a hole drilled through it and a metal chain through it. She reached out to take it and held it in her hands smiling. When she looked back at him he pointed to the surface as he swam up. She was hesitant but followed him her head poking up with only her eyes and ears showing. He was treading water and smiling his bright blue eyes looking into hers, they were beautiful, like the ocean his eyes were so blue. His chestnut brown hair was dripping wet and he shook his head a bit spraying her with little drops of water. She sunk under the water only to come up slowly again, this time her head was all the way out of the water.
"Thank you for returning my watch the other day." He said softly.
She said nothing but looking at him. She brought her hands up from under the water holding the pearl necklace in the palms of them offering it back to him. Perhaps she misunderstood him and he wanted to show this to her and he wanted it back as well.
"No it's for you!" He said reaching out to close her hands on the necklace.
"What's your name? I'm Robin." he said offering a genuine smile.
"De...Depore..." She whispered.
"It's very nice to meet you Depore. I've never seen anything like you before! You're beautiful.."</b> He said softly.
She blushed slightly as she tried to hide her smile under the water. After that the two of them became fast friends. She got confused easily at some of the things he talked about but they talked none the less, he corrected some of her English and he told her stories of home. They would meet far from the others, he would sit at the edge of the water and she would lay in the surf. They met everyday for hours she collected pretty shells she found and would give them to him since he seemed to like them.
He explained they were here to catch exotic animals to sell them where he came from. The thought was foreign to her but she didn't think much of it and the topic was never brought up more than once. She told him of where she came from and he seemed so intrigued it made her happy that someone took such interest in her. Maybe she was selfish and she wanted the attention all for herself and there was no one else here to be given gifts or be praised for their beauty, just her.
Chapter 4:
One afternoon Robin was late as Depore waited for him in the shallow water. Finally she saw him jogging over and she waved at him he was sweaty and out of breath but he made it there none the less. He snuck away from the crew and away from his chores to meet with her.
